Chimney sweep logs do not sweep chimneys. They loosen some creosote - which then falls where a brush and vacuum still have to collect it.
Why Austin Homeowners Choose Gelco Chimney Cleaning
We provide independent Gelco service in Austin, from the older bungalows in Hyde Park to the newer builds in South Austin and the steep hillside homes in Westlake. Our techs have spent years working on Gelco fireplaces across this city, learning exactly how the factory components age in Central Texas heat and humidity. We’re not a Gelco dealer or authorized service center. We’re an independent chimney company that knows these units inside and out, and we show you photos of everything we find before you spend a dime. That matters when you’re trying to figure out whether a smoky fireplace needs a $200 sweep or a $1,800 damper replacement. Call (361) 603-5116 and we’ll walk you through it.
Why Trust Hadley Chimney Austin for Your Gelco Chimney Cleaning?
Gelco built a solid reputation for affordable, dependable fireplaces. The Galaxy Series wood-burning units, the Vent-Free Gas Fireplace System, the Direct Vent Gas Series, and the Outdoor Fireplace Kits all show up regularly in Austin homes. But here’s what the manufacturer’s generic website won’t tell you: Austin’s climate treats these units differently than a dry northern climate would. Cory Mitchell, our owner at Hadley Chimney Austin, grew up in Los Angeles and trained through the HVAC and building systems program at Los Angeles Trade-Technical College before putting over two decades into chimney work. He’s seen what Central Texas humidity does to creosote formation and what heat cycling does to Gelco dampers. Every tech on our crew carries that same working knowledge. We know which Gelco components fail first in Austin, which parts are worth repairing versus replacing, and how to service these units without voiding your warranty. We’re a multi-brand shop, but Gelco work is a significant share of what we do because so many Austin builders installed these units over the years.

Common Gelco Chimney Cleaning Problems We Fix in Austin
Gelco fireplaces are generally well-built. But they have predictable failure patterns in this region. These are the issues we see most often when we’re called out to Austin homes:
- Creosote glazing in Gelco Galaxy Series wood-burning units. Austin’s hot, humid summers mean masonry and flue liners absorb moisture. Then when we get those sporadic cold snaps and people fire up the fireplace, the moisture combines with smoke to create a hard, shiny creosote glaze that’s difficult to remove with a standard brush. This isn’t a Gelco design flaw. It’s what happens when a wood-burning fireplace lives in a humid climate and gets used without a pre-season inspection. We use rotary sweeping equipment to break through glazed creosote that a standard chimney sweep can’t touch.
- Warped throat dampers from Central Texas heat cycling. This is the single most common Gelco repair call we get in Austin. The throat damper sits directly above the firebox, and it takes a beating. Austin summers push attic and chimney temperatures well past 100 degrees, then a cold front rolls through and we drop 40 degrees in a day. That expansion and contraction cycle slowly warps the damper plate until it won’t seat properly. You’ll notice a smoky room, a draft when the fireplace isn’t in use, or higher cooling bills because conditioned air is escaping up the flue. We replace warped Gelco dampers with heat-rated aftermarket plates that hold their shape better in our climate. A proper damper replacement typically runs $250 to $450 in the Austin market.
- Cracked firebrick from thermal shock. We see this a lot in mid-century Austin homes with double-sided or see-through fireplaces. Those units cycle between hot and cold rapidly because they’re exposed on two sides. The firebrick inside Gelco fireboxes can crack when the temperature swings too quickly, especially if the brick has absorbed moisture during our humid summers. Small cracks are cosmetic. But if the crack widens or the brick starts to shift, heat can reach the framing behind the firebox, and that’s a fire hazard. We assess the damage with a camera scope and show you photos before recommending anything.
- Gas valve clogging in Gelco vent-free gas fireplaces. Austin has hard water. If your home doesn’t have a water softener and you run a vent-free Gelco gas fireplace regularly, mineral deposits from evaporated moisture can work their way into the gas valve and pilot assembly over time. The pilot lights fine, but the main burner won’t stay on. That’s often a clogged valve or restricted orifice. We clean gas valves and pilot assemblies as part of our vent-free service, and we’ll tell you honestly if the valve needs replacement rather than cleaning. A new gas valve for a Gelco vent-free unit typically runs $180 to $350 installed, depending on the model.
- Nesting debris in Gelco chimneys during the off-season. Austin’s mild winters mean a lot of fireplaces sit dormant from March through November. During that stretch, birds and squirrels find their way into uncapped or poorly capped Gelco flues. We pull nests, inspect for animal damage, and install proper chimney caps when the original Gelco cap has failed or gone missing. This is a spring and fall issue in Austin more than a winter one.
Gelco Parts & Our Repair-vs-Replace Approach
Here’s our straight answer on parts: for critical safety components like gas valves, thermocouples, and pilot assemblies on Gelco gas units, we install OEM Gelco parts whenever they’re available. Those components affect gas flow and combustion safety, and we’re not cutting corners there. For wear items like firebrick, gaskets, dampers, and refractory panels, we use high-quality aftermarket equivalents that match or exceed the original spec. In many cases, the aftermarket firebrick we install is denser and more thermal shock resistant than what Gelco originally shipped, which matters in Austin’s rapid temperature swings. We stock common Gelco replacement parts locally, so we’re not waiting on a ground shipment from a distributor when your fireplace needs a damper or a gasket set. And on the repair-versus-replace question, our default is to repair. If the Gelco unit still has structural integrity, we’ll tell you that straight and quote the repair. If the firebox has cracked through or the flue liner has failed, we’ll show you the camera footage and explain why replacement is the honest call. Call (361) 603-5116 and we’ll give you a written quote before any work starts.
Our Gelco Service Process – Step by Step
Here’s what happens when you book Gelco service with Hadley Chimney Austin:
- 1
Diagnosis. The tech arrives in a tracked window, not a four-hour guess. We inspect the full Gelco system: firebox, damper, smoke chamber, flue liner, and cap. We use a camera scope to see inside the flue, and we show you the photos on site. If it’s a gas unit, we check the valve, pilot, burner, and venting.
- 2
Repair or install. We give you a written price before we pick up a brush or a wrench. You approve it. Then we do the work. Creosote removal, damper replacement, firebrick repair, gas valve cleaning or replacement, chimney cap install, whatever the diagnostic showed.
- 3
Test. For wood-burning units, we verify draft with a smoke test before we call the job done. For gas units, we cycle the burner and confirm the pilot holds and the flame pattern is correct. You see the results, not just our word.
- 4
Warranty. Every Gelco repair carries our 365-Day Done Right Promise in writing. If the repair fails within a year, we come back and fix it free. That’s not an upsell or a promotion. It’s how we’ve done business since 2003.

AfterGelco Products We Service & Install in Austin
We service the full Gelco residential lineup you’ll find in Austin homes. That includes the Gelco Galaxy Series wood-burning fireplaces, the Gelco Vent-Free Gas Fireplace System, the Gelco Direct Vent Gas Fireplace Series, and Gelco Outdoor Fireplace Kits. On the service side, we cover everything from our Chimney Sweep services and creosote removal to damper repair, firebox rebuilds, gas valve work, and cap replacement. We don’t install new Gelco factory-built fireplaces from the ground up. We’re a service and repair shop, not a dealer. But when your existing Gelco unit needs work, we have the parts, the experience, and the local knowledge to do it right.
We Also Service These Brands
Gelco isn’t the only name we work on. We regularly service and repair DuraFlex flexible liner systems and HeatShield ceramic repair compound applications, along with other major chimney and fireplace brands across Austin. Being multi-brand means we diagnose based on how the system actually works, not on brand loyalty.
FAQs – Gelco Chimney Cleaning Service in Austin
No. We are an independent Gelco service provider, not an authorized dealer or warranty center. That independence means we work for you, not for the manufacturer. We don’t push replacements because a brand rep told us to, and we don’t mark up parts because we have exclusive dealership leverage. We service Gelco units because they’re common in Austin and we know them well. If your unit is still under the manufacturer’s warranty and requires warranty service, we’ll tell you that directly and point you to the authorized channel. For everything else, we’ll take care of it.
For critical safety components like gas valves, thermocouples, and pilot assemblies, we install genuine Gelco OEM parts whenever they’re available. For wear items like firebrick, gaskets, and dampers, we use high-quality aftermarket equivalents that match or exceed the original spec. You’ll see exactly what we’re installing on the written quote before any work begins. Call (361) 603-5116 and we’ll walk through the parts choice for your specific model.
Most Gelco chimney sweeps and basic repairs are done in 60 to 90 minutes. Damper replacements and firebrick repairs typically run two to three hours. Gas valve replacements on vent-free units can take up to half a day if we need to pull and reinstall the burner assembly. We’ll give you an honest time range when you book, and you’ll have live arrival tracking so you know when we’re on the way.
We cover the Gelco Galaxy Series wood-burning fireplaces, Gelco Vent-Free Gas Fireplace Systems, Gelco Direct Vent Gas Fireplace Series, and Gelco Outdoor Fireplace Kits. If you have a Gelco unit and you’re not sure which series it is, we can identify it from photos or during the inspection. The model plate is usually inside the lower grille or on the firebox side.
Routine cleaning and the installation of non-OEM wear parts like firebrick or gaskets generally does not void a manufacturer’s warranty. That said, we can’t speak for Gelco’s warranty terms on every model year. If your unit is still under the manufacturer’s warranty, we’ll tell you that up front and recommend the path that protects your coverage. If the warranty has expired, which is true for most Gelco units in Austin at this point, the conversation shifts to what’s the most durable and cost-effective repair.
Gelco chimney cleaning in Austin typically runs $180 to $320 for a standard sweep, depending on the unit type, accessibility, and how much creosote is present. Rotrary sweeping for glazed creosote usually adds $75 to $150. Damper replacements run $250 to $450. Firebrick repair starts around $200 and goes up based on how many bricks need replacement. Gas valve replacement on Gelco vent-free units typically runs $180 to $350 installed. Call (361) 603-5116 for an exact written quote. Estimates are free.
It’s mostly the humidity. Austin’s summers load your chimney masonry and flue with moisture, and when you burn on top of that moisture, creosote forms faster and harder. Add sporadic winter use and it compounds. When you moved from a dry climate, the same burning habits produced less creosote because the flue was drier. Here, we recommend an inspection before first seasonal use and a sweep at least annually if you burn regularly. A camera scope gives us the full picture, and you’ll see the photos.
Almost always, yes. Small cracks in the firebrick are cosmetic and just need monitoring. Wider cracks or shifting brick require replacement of the affected bricks and possibly the refractory panels behind them. The only time a cracked firebrick means a bigger problem is when heat has reached the framing behind the firebox or the firebox has structural cracking. We’ll show you the camera scope footage and tell you straight which situation you’re in. Most of the time, a targeted firebrick repair gets the unit safe and working again.
This is usually one of three things on Gelco gas units: a dirty or failing thermocouple, a clogged gas valve or burner orifice, or a venting restriction. In Austin, the hard water mineral angle shows up more than in other regions. The thermocouple senses the pilot flame and holds the gas valve open. If it’s coated or failing, the valve drops out. We clean the thermocouple and pilot assembly first, then test the valve. If the valve is the problem, we’ll quote a replacement and show you the part on the written estimate.
Yes. The most common Gelco outdoor fireplace kit issue in Austin is burner clogging from dirt, debris, and insect nests in the burner ports, followed by corrosion on the burner and gas connections from our humid climate and occasional freezing rain. Outdoor units live outside year-round, and they take weather abuse. We clean the burner, check the gas line and connections, and inspect the firebox for rust and structural issues. We’ll show you the photo first, then talk about what actually needs doing.
At least once a year if you burn wood regularly, even if the season is short. The Austin humidity makes creosote build up faster than you’d expect from mild winters. Gas Gelco units should be inspected annually too, mostly for venting and burner condition. At minimum, get an inspection before your first fire of the season. A sweep costs a fraction of what a chimney fire can do. Call (361) 603-5116 to schedule.
