Worth knowing

Chimney sweep logs do not sweep chimneys. They loosen some creosote - which then falls where a brush and vacuum still have to collect it.

Gelco Crown Repair: The Austin Owner’s Guide

If your Gelco chimney crown is cracked, spalled, or letting water run down the flue, we can match the correct Gelco-compatible crown repair material and have it installed, typically $385 – $625 for most Austin homes. We stock the crown repair products on our trucks, so a single visit usually handles the whole job. Most Austin homeowners discover the problem one of two ways: they see a water stain on the ceiling near the fireplace after a heavy rain, or a roofer points up at the chimney during an unrelated inspection and says the crown looks rough.

Here’s the thing about Gelco specifically: their chimney crown systems were built around specific mortar and sealant chemistry, and the crown is the single most exposed part of the whole chimney. It takes direct Texas sun, torrential spring storms, and the occasional freeze-thaw cycle that Austin gets in January. When it fails, it fails from the top down: the surface degrades, hairline cracks open up, and water finds its way into the masonry below.

Which Gelco Models This Applies To

Gelco crown systems are found on a wide range of prefabricated and masonry chimneys across the Austin area, from newer builds in Mueller and Easton Park to older ranch-style homes in Crestview and Allandale. The crown we repair sits at the very top of the chimney stack, capping the masonry and sealing around the flue tile or liner. It’s not a cast-iron or steel part you can read a model number off of, so we identify compatibility by three things: the flue tile dimensions, the crown’s overall footprint, and the existing surface material.

What matters for the repair is matching the right Gelco crown coat or sealant formula to what’s already up there. Gelco manufactured their crown systems with a specific mineral-based surface compound, and using a mismatched generic product is how you end up with a crown that looks fine for a year and then starts flaking. We carry the Gelco-compatible crown repair compounds on the truck and also stock equivalent aftermarket products from HeatShield and DuraFlex when the original material can’t be matched exactly. An OEM-spec Gelco compound is the right call when the existing crown is intact enough to resurface. If the crown has lost significant material, a full recast with a quality aftermarket crown mix is often the better long-term play, and we’ll tell you which one we’d choose and why before any work starts.

One compatibility gotcha most homeowners don’t know: if your chimney has a stainless liner installed inside the flue, the crown repair has to be done around the liner’s top plate, not just over the old masonry surface. We run into this often in Austin homes where a liner was added in the last decade but the crown was never touched. Skipping that detail leads to a seal that fails within eighteen months.

Signs Your Gelco Crown Repair Is Failing

  • Water stains on the ceiling or wall near the fireplace. This is the number one complaint we hear in Austin, and it usually means the crown has stopped shedding water and it’s now running down the inside of the chimney chase. The crown’s job is to deflect water away from the flue. When it fails, gravity does the rest.
  • Visible cracks in the crown surface when you look down at it from the roof line. Hairline cracks are manageable. Cracks you can fit a nickel into mean the freeze-thaw cycle has done real damage, and resurfacing alone may not hold. Cory Mitchell has seen crowns in Hyde Park that looked like a dried lake bed, and those ones need a full recast, not a coat.
  • Chunks of crown material on the roof or in the gutter. That means the surface compound is spalling, which is the technical term for flaking or breaking away. Once the aggregate in the crown mix starts separating, there’s no surface left to seal.
  • A white, chalky residue running down the brick below the crown. That’s efflorescence: water moving through the masonry is dissolving salts in the mortar and leaving them on the surface. It tells you water has already penetrated the crown and is working its way down.
  • Damp or musty smell inside the firebox after rain. A failing crown lets water drip down along the flue tile and into the smoke chamber. You may not see a stain on the wall yet, but the smell gives it away first.

Replacement Cost & What’s Included

For Austin homes, a full Gelco crown repair typically runs $385 – $625 installed, with the price depending mostly on crown size, accessibility, and whether we’re resurfacing the existing crown or recasting it entirely. A full recast on a large masonry chimney with scaffolding access can push toward $700 – $900, but that’s uncommon for the standard Austin home. You’ll get a written price before anyone touches a brush, so the number we quote is the number you pay.

Every crown repair includes removal of loose material, surface prep, application of the Gelco-compatible crown compound or equivalent, sealing around the flue tile and liner top plate, and a written guarantee. If the repair fails within 365 days, we come back and fix it free. That’s not a promotional offer; it’s the standing terms on every repair we do. We also photograph the crown before and after, so you can see the surface condition we started with and the finished result without climbing up there yourself.

DIY or Call Us?

Here’s the honest split. You can absolutely inspect your crown from the ground or a safe roofline vantage point with binoculars. You can look for cracks, spalling, and efflorescence. You cannot safely work on a crown without proper ladder setup, roof anchors, and a clear understanding of what you’re mixing and why, and we don’t recommend it. The crown is at the highest point of your house, and a fall from that height is one of the most common serious injuries in home maintenance. Plus, the material chemistry matters: standard mortar patch won’t bond to a Gelco surface the way a matched compound will, and a bad patch job can trap water behind the repair and speed up the damage.

If you’re seeing signs of crown failure, call us at (361) 603-5116. We’ll give you a straight answer on whether it’s a simple resurface or a full recast, a written price, and photos of everything we find.
