Chimney sweep logs do not sweep chimneys. They loosen some creosote - which then falls where a brush and vacuum still have to collect it.
Gelco Chimney Cap Installation: The Austin Owner’s Guide
A Gelco chimney cap installation in Austin typically runs $285 to $540 installed, depending on the cap model, chase crown condition, and how easily our techs can access the roofline. We stock Gelco-compatible caps on the truck and can usually complete the swap the same visit. Most homeowners discover a problem either after a windstorm knocked something loose, or when they spot rust staining running down the chase and realize water has been getting under the old cap for months. If you’re seeing water in the firebox after rain, or the cap is visibly leaning, that’s the tell.
Which Gelco Models This Applies To
Gelco makes two primary cap styles we install across Austin: the single-flue cap for individual round or square clay tile flues, and the multi-flue cap that spans the full width of a masonry chimney crown. The factor that matters most is your flue tile’s outside dimension, not the brand name stamped on the old cap. A Gelco cap sized for an 8×8 clay tile will not seat properly on a 9×13 flue, and that mismatch is exactly how water sneaks in around the base. If your old cap has a Gelco label, it’s usually on the underside of the hood or on the mounting bracket, but after a few Austin summers the ink is often baked off. The better move is to measure the outside of the flue tile or have us do it from the roof.
On the OEM versus aftermarket question for Gelco specifically: there are quality galvanized and stainless aftermarket caps that fit Gelco dimensions just fine, but we default to stainless in Austin because the humidity and periodic hail make galvanized a five-to-seven-year part. A 304 stainless cap in the Gelco footprint will outlast galvanized by a decade or more. We also stock Gelco-compatible mounting brackets separately, which matters because the bracket is often still solid even when the hood has rusted through.
Styles & brands we work with

Signs Your Gelco Chimney Cap Installation Is Failing
- Water staining on the fireplace wall or ceiling below. This usually means the cap hood has rusted through or the mounting bracket pulled loose at the seal point. Rain follows the flue opening straight down into the firebox.
- Rust streaks on the chase or brick below the cap. Galvanized caps shed rust particles when the coating fails, and rain carries that staining down the exterior. You’ll see orange-brown streaks on the crown and down the brick.
- Cap is leaning or visibly loose after a storm. The bracket screws can work free from expansion and contraction cycles, especially on masonry chimneys in Austin’s hot-cold swings. A leaning cap means the seal at the base is compromised.
- Birds, squirrels, or debris making it into the flue. A cap with broken screening or a lifted hood stops doing its second job, keeping animals out. You’ll hear scratching or smell nesting material in the firebox.
- Your fire pulls poorly even after a sweep. A cap that’s partially blocked by rust or nesting restricts draft, and the smoke back-puffs into the room because it can’t exit cleanly.

AfterReplacement Cost & What’s Included
In Austin, you should expect:
- Single-flue Gelco-style stainless cap installed: $285 to $390
- Multi-flue or custom-width cap installed: $390 to $540
- Chase crown repair or re-seal added: $120 to $250, only if we find the crown is spalling or cracking
The range comes down to cap size, whether the old bracket can be reused, and roof access. Every Gelco cap installation we do in Austin includes a written price before we start, the new cap, mounting hardware, a sweep of the exposed flue area, and a photo report showing the old cap off and the new one seated. The work carries our 365-Day Done Right Promise: if anything about the install fails in the first year, we come back and fix it at no charge. That’s a written guarantee, not a verbal one.
DIY or Call Us?
If you’re comfortable on a roof with a proper ladder and safety gear, you can absolutely check the cap from the eave line and snap photos of what you see. What we’d rather you not do is detach or reposition a chimney cap on a steep Austin roofline without roof brackets and a second person. The moment you unbolt a bracket on a sloped roof, the cap becomes a loose piece of steel with sharp edges, and the chimney crown is not a great place to lose your footing. If you can safely get eyes on it, send us photos and measurements, we’ll tell you what cap fits and what it costs. If not, call us at (361) 603-5116 and we’ll put it in the schedule. We’ll show you the photo first. Then we’ll talk.
FAQs
A stainless Gelco-style cap in Austin typically lasts 12 to 18 years. A galvanized version usually starts failing around year five to seven because our humidity and occasional hail strip the coating faster than dry climates do. If your old cap has rust staining, it’s already past the point where patching makes sense.
We can sometimes repair a Gelco cap when the damage is limited to the screen or a single bent corner of the hood. If the hood has rusted through, the screen is tearing away from the frame, or the bracket is distorted, replacement is cheaper than the labor to patch it. Call (361) 603-5116 with a couple photos and we’ll give you an honest read.
Most Gelco chimney cap installations in Austin take between 45 and 90 minutes once the tech is on the roof. The real variable is roof access and whether the old bracket needs to be ground off and replaced. We’ll give you a written time window and a live arrival tracker before the tech shows up.
We stock common Gelco-compatible single-flue and multi-flue caps in stainless on the truck, along with DuraFlex and HeatShield products for related chimney work. If you have an unusual flue size, we can usually source the right cap from our supplier within one to three business days, and we’ll tell you before you commit to anything. We are an independent service provider and not affiliated with Gelco, so we’re free to match the right cap to your chimney, not to a brand mandate.
