Worth knowing

Chimney sweep logs do not sweep chimneys. They loosen some creosote - which then falls where a brush and vacuum still have to collect it.

Famco Chimney Cap Installation: The Austin Owner’s Guide

Famco chimney cap installation in Austin typically runs $325 to $680 installed, depending on the cap size, flue configuration, and whether the existing mounting hardware is salvageable. We stock Famco-compatible caps on our trucks and can usually complete the full swap in one visit, often within a day or two of your call. Most Austin homeowners figure out their cap needs help the same way: they spot rust streaks on the chimney chase, hear a metallic rattle during spring windstorms, or find a squirrel that has decided the flue is now a studio apartment.

And that last one is not a joke. We pulled a nest out of an unfastened Famco cap in Barton Hills last March that would have filled a five-gallon bucket twice over.

Which Famco Models This Applies To

If your chimney has a Famco cap on it, you are almost certainly dealing with one of two series: the FC (Fisher style, multi-flue) or the EC (single-flue round cap with expanded metal mesh). Famco’s single-flue EC caps run from 8-inch to 13-inch inside diameters in half-inch steps, and the multi-flue FC series is sized by the outside dimensions of the flue tile cluster, not the individual tiles. That measurement distinction trips up a lot of Austin homeowners who order online, receive the wrong size, and call us after the return window closes.

On the OEM versus aftermarket question for Famco specifically: Famco makes a solid cap, but the mesh and mounting straps are the same gauge stainless you will find on quality aftermarket equivalents from Copperfield, which we also stock. The honest answer is that a properly sized aftermarket cap with a lifetime stainless mesh will outlast a Famco OEM part in Texas weather if the mounting brackets are upgraded. What matters more than the brand stamp is the material spec: 304 stainless minimum for the hood and base, and a mesh size tight enough to keep out a flying squirrel but open enough to not choke draft.

Signs Your Famco Chimney Cap Installation Is Failing

  • Rust staining below the cap line on the chase or crown. This means the cap’s base or mounting hardware is galvanized steel, not stainless, and has started bleeding onto the masonry. In Austin’s humidity swings, galvanized hardware on a Famco cap usually shows rust by year six or seven.
  • The cap is loose and shifts when you nudge it. Famco caps mount with either corner brackets or a center draw-down strap. If the strap has corroded through, the cap sits free on the flue tile and becomes a wind sail during Hill Country gusts.
  • You hear a metallic flutter or tapping on windy days. That is a loose spark arrestor mesh or a cap that has one bracket still holding. Every gust cycles the metal, which eventually fatigues the point where the other bracket lets go.
  • You see daylight or animal activity inside the flue from below. If the damper is open and you can spot a gap in the mesh, a raccoon will find it before you do. We have repaired more Austin chimneys for animal entry than for almost any other cap-related failure.
  • The spark arrestor mesh is burned out or sagging. In homes with wood-burning fireplaces that run hot, the mesh near the center of the cap can burn through over time. Once the mesh fails, it is no longer doing its only job, which is stopping airborne embers from leaving the flue during a live fire.

Replacement Cost & What’s Included

A Famco-style chimney cap replacement in Austin runs $325 to $680 installed, with most single-flue jobs landing between $375 and $475. The spread comes from three things: cap size (a 13-inch round with a taller mesh costs more than an 8-inch), the condition of the flue tile crown where the cap mounts, and whether we are working from a ladder or need to set up roof access on a steep pitch near the lake. Multi-flue FC-style caps that cover 32 inches or more of flue tile run $550 to $680 installed.

What you get for that number: the cap itself (Famco-compatible stainless, sized on-site with an actual tape measure, not a guess), new stainless mounting hardware, and disposal of the old cap. We also photograph the flue and crown before we touch anything, so you can see exactly why the old cap failed and what the new one is anchored to. Every cap installation comes with our 365-Day Done Right Promise in writing: if the cap loosens, rattles, or shifts within a year, we fix it free.

DIY or Call Us?

You can safely do the diagnostic part yourself: use binoculars from the ground to check for rust streaks, missing mesh, or a cap that sits cockeyed. That photo will tell you most of what you need to know. What you should not do is get on a roof and start unbolting a Famco cap that has been up there for eight years, especially in Austin, where tile roofs and clay barrel profiles make roof work genuinely unforgiving. We have seen what happens when a homeowner tries to stand on a tile hip to reach a cap, and it ends with broken tile, a twisted ankle, and a cap that still needs replacing.

If your flue is accessible from a safe, flat roof and you want to inspect the mesh yourself, turn off any pilot appliance first and wear gloves, because the edges of expanded metal are sharp enough to open a finger. But install is not a “fix it on a Saturday” job. Cory Mitchell has stood on enough Austin roofs to say it plainly: let us do the climbing. Call (361) 603-5116 and we will quote the exact cap, the exact price, and the exact day before anyone gets on a ladder.
