Chimney sweep logs do not sweep chimneys. They loosen some creosote - which then falls where a brush and vacuum still have to collect it.
Copperfield Chimney Repair in Austin: What to Know First
We repair Copperfield chimneys throughout Austin, and most jobs take one visit, usually two to four hours depending on what’s actually wrong. We’re an independent Copperfield service provider – not a factory-authorized shop – which means we fix what’s broken using the right parts for the job, whether that’s Copperfield-specific hardware or a better-fit alternative from DuraFlex or HeatShield. A typical Copperfield chimney repair in Austin runs between $275 and $1,800 depending on whether we’re repointing mortar, replacing flashing, or rebuilding a spalled section.
If you own a Copperfield chimney and something looks off – cracked brick, a damp patch by the firebox, water stains on the ceiling near the flue – call (361) 603-5116. Cory Mitchell and the Hadley Chimney Austin crew will take a look, show you the photo first, and give you a written price before anything gets touched.
How Copperfield Products Fail – and How We Fix Them
- Copperfield prefab flue liner cracking at the seams. Copperfield’s factory-built chimney sections use a rolled metal flue liner, and in Austin’s clay-heavy soil, foundation movement puts stress on the liner joints. We’ve pulled liners from Copperfield units in Barton Hills and Crestview where the seam had separated just enough to leak exhaust gas into the chase. The fix is usually a DuraFlex flexible liner dropped through the existing chase, which solves the joint problem permanently because there are no seams to separate.
- Spalling brick on Copperfield exterior chimney caps. Austin’s freeze-thaw cycle is mild compared to the Midwest, but we still get enough winter moisture and summer heat expansion to pop the face off older Copperfield cap bricks. Once the brick face flakes away, water gets into the mortar bed and the damage accelerates. We grind out the failed mortar, replace any brick that’s lost more than a quarter inch of face depth, and repoint the surrounding joints. Then we waterproof with a siloxane-based sealer so the repair lasts longer than the original surface did.
- Flashing failure where the Copperfield chase meets the roofline. Copperfield chimneys installed during Austin’s 1990s and early 2000s building boom often used standard aluminum flashing, and aluminum doesn’t handle Texas sun well. The expansion and contraction breaks the seal at the corners, and water follows the chase down into the firebox and subfloor. We cut out the old flashing, inspect the underlayment, and install new step and counter flashing with a proper overlapping seal. This is the single most common Copperfield repair we do in Austin, and it’s the one most often misdiagnosed as a roof leak.
- Mortar joint erosion in Copperfield fireboxes. The firebox in a Copperfield unit sees extreme temperature swings, and over time the refractory mortar between the firebrick crumbles. You’ll see sand-like grit in the bottom of the firebox and hairline cracks running through the mortar lines. We tuckpoint the firebox using high-temperature refractory mortar, not standard masonry mix, because ordinary mortar breaks down at the temperatures a working Copperfield firebox reaches. If the firebrick itself is cracked, we talk through replacement options before touching anything.
- Copperfield damper plates warping from heat cycling. The damper plate on older Copperfield units is a flat cast piece that warps slightly with each heating season. Once it warps, the seal around the damper frame gets loose, and that’s when you notice the draft pulling smoke back into the room on a windy Austin day. Sometimes we can reseat and adjust the plate. If the warp is beyond adjustment, we replace the damper assembly with a top-sealing unit that closes tighter and keeps conditioned air from escaping up the flue year-round.

Our Copperfield Chimney Repair Process
- 1
You call us at (361) 603-5116. A live person answers, 24/7. We book a window that works and send you live arrival tracking so you know when we’re rolling up.
- 2
We inspect the whole Copperfield unit. Flue liner, firebox, damper, exterior brick, cap, and flashing. We run a camera scope through the flue so we can see exactly where the failure is.
- 3
We show you the photo. Cory’s rule applies here: “I’ll show you the photo first. Then we’ll talk.” You’ll see the crack, the separation, the spalled face, whatever it is, and we’ll explain what it means in plain terms.
- 4
We price the repair in writing. No verbal estimates that change when the work starts. You get a line-item price on a digital invoice before we pick up a single tool. If the job needs a Copperfield-specific part we’ll tell you, and if a DuraFlex or Gelco equivalent does the job better for less, we’ll tell you that too.
- 5
We do the repair. Background-checked, uniformed techs complete the work, document it with before-and-after photos, and run a final test – draft check, smoke test, water test, whatever the repair calls for.
- 6
You get the guarantee. Every Copperfield repair comes with our 365-Day Done Right Promise in writing. If it’s not done right, we make it right. If the repair fails within a year, the second visit is free. That’s not a promotion. It’s the standing commitment on every job.

AfterWhat Copperfield Chimney Repair Costs in Austin
Here’s what we typically see on Copperfield units around Austin:
- Mortar repointing (tuckpointing): $275 – $700 depending on how many courses need work and how high the scaffold has to go
- Spalling brick repair: $400 – $900 for brick replacement, grinding, and repointing on the damaged area
- Chimney waterproofing (siloxane sealer): $350 – $650 for a full exterior application on the exposed chimney stack
- Flashing repair or replacement: $450 – $1,200 depending on whether we’re patching a corner seal or cutting out and replacing the full flashing system
- Copperfield flue liner replacement (DuraFlex drop-in): $1,200 – $1,800 including the liner, installation, and a post-install camera verification
- Partial chimney rebuild (top section): $900 – $1,800 when the top courses have deteriorated past repointing
What moves the price is access – a two-story Copperfield chimney on a steep Austin roof costs more to reach safely than a one-story unit with a walkable pitch – plus the amount of damaged material. You’ll always get the written number before we start, and the estimate is free. Call (361) 603-5116 for an exact quote.
Why Austin Homeowners Call Hadley Chimney Austin for Copperfield Work
We’ve been doing chimney work since 2003, and we know how Copperfield units behave in Austin’s specific climate – the clay soil movement, the UV exposure, the wind patterns off the Hill Country that put unusual stress on caps and flashing. Our techs show up in a tracked window, not a four-hour guess, and they carry a camera scope because we think you should see what’s happening inside your own flue before you decide anything. The Relay Visibility Guarantee means live arrival times, before-and-after photo documentation, and a written price before work begins – on every Copperfield job, not just the big ones. We stock and work with DuraFlex flexible liners, HeatShield ceramic repair compound, and Gelco sealants as needed, so when a Copperfield part isn’t the right call, we have proven alternatives already on hand. And every repair carries the 365-Day Done Right Promise in writing, including a free second visit if it fails.
FAQs
It depends on the warranty terms and the age of your Copperfield unit. Most Copperfield warranties cover the factory-built chimney components, not the surrounding brick, mortar, flashing, or firebox materials, and those are the things we repair most often in Austin. As an independent Copperfield service provider, we don’t modify the factory-built chase or liner structure without telling you exactly what the warranty implications are and what your options look like. If a repair could affect your warranty coverage, we’ll say so before we touch anything. Call (361) 603-5116 and we’ll walk you through what applies to your specific unit.
Yes. We have access to Copperfield chimney accessories and components through our supply network, and for liner work we often recommend a DuraFlex flexible liner because it solves the seam-separation issue that plagues older Copperfield units in Austin’s shifting clay soil. When your Copperfield unit needs a brand-specific part, we get it. When an equivalent from DuraFlex, HeatShield, or Gelco does the same job better, we tell you and price both options so you can choose. Estimates are free.
Most Copperfield repairs we do in Austin are finished in a single visit, usually two to four hours. Flashing replacement, mortar repointing, and spalling brick repair are all same-visit jobs. A full liner replacement takes a half day because we do a camera inspection before and after to verify the install. Booking is usually available within a few days. Call (361) 603-5116 and we’ll find the earliest window that works for you.
That depends on where the damage sits. If the factory-built chase and liner are intact and the damage is in the surrounding mortar, brick, flashing, or cap, repair is nearly always the right call and costs a fraction of replacement. If the Copperfield factory flue has separated at the seams or the firebox refractory has failed, we’ll show you the camera footage and talk through whether a DuraFlex reline or a HeatShield treatment restores function for less than a full replacement. The photo comes first, then the conversation, then a written price. That’s how we do every Copperfield call in Austin.
Small mortar cracks let water in, and water expands when it freezes – even in Austin’s short winter freezes. The crack widens, the brick starts spalling, and within a couple of seasons you’re looking at a rebuild instead of a repoint. If the flue liner seam has separated, exhaust gas can leak into the chase and into living spaces, and that’s a carbon monoxide risk you shouldn’t sit on. If you’ve noticed water stains, grit in the firebox, or a draft that pulls smoke the wrong way, call (361) 603-5116 and we’ll take a look before it gets worse.
