Worth knowing

Chimney sweep logs do not sweep chimneys. They loosen some creosote - which then falls where a brush and vacuum still have to collect it.

Gelco Damper Repair: The Austin Owner’s Guide

Gelco damper repair in Austin typically runs $265 – $485 installed, depending on whether we’re replacing the damper plate, the cable assembly, or the full top-seal assembly. Most Gelco damper jobs are done in a single visit because we keep common Gelco replacement parts (cables, pawls, top-seal gaskets, and mounting hardware) stocked on the trucks. Owners usually discover the problem the first cold night they try to close the damper and hear a metallic snap, or when they feel a draft coming down the chimney that wasn’t there last winter.

Here’s the thing about Gelco dampers: they’re actually one of the more repairable top-seal dampers on the market, but only if you catch the failure early. We’ll show you the photo first. Then we’ll talk.

Which Gelco Models This Applies To

Gelco makes two main top-seal damper lines that we see across Austin, from Hyde Park craftsman bungalows to new builds out toward Dripping Springs. The first is the standard round or square top-mount damper, sized by flue tile dimension: 8″, 10″, 12″, and 13″ square, and 8″ through 15″ round. The second is the Gelco cast-aluminum throat damper, which mounts in the firebox throat instead of at the flue top.

Here’s the compatibility gotcha that trips up a lot of non-chimney folks: Gelco’s top-mount dampers are sized to the flue tile interior, not the visible outside opening. A homeowner with a measuring tape will often report a 14″ flue when they actually have a 13″ or 12″ damper opening, because they measured the chimney cap or the outside of the tile. We verify with a caliper before ordering anything, and since we carry common sizes on the truck, most jobs don’t need a second trip.

OEM vs aftermarket matters less with Gelco than with most damper brands, honestly. Gelco’s cables and pawl mechanisms have been remarkably consistent across their product generations, so a current-model cable kit will often fit a damper installed in the early 2000s. We use OEM Gelco parts when they’re available, and for discontinued hardware we source from a quality aftermarket line that cross-references the original Gelco part numbers. We also stock DuraFlex and HeatShield materials for the chimney rebuild work that sometimes accompanies a damper replacement.

Signs Your Gelco Damper Repair Is Failing

  • You can’t move the handle – the cable has either kinked inside its housing or snapped at the pawl connection. This is the most common Gelco failure we see, and it’s almost always the cable assembly rather than the damper plate itself.
  • The damper closed but you feel a draft anyway – the silicone rubber gasket around the plate edge has hardened and no longer seals against the flue rim. Austin’s hot, dry summers bake that gasket until it cracks, even on dampers less than five years old.
  • You hear metal scraping when opening or closing – the damper plate is no longer seated square in its frame, usually because the frame’s mounting brackets loosened or a weld point on the plate hinge is failing.
  • The cable handle feels loose or spins without resistance – the cable end has detached from the pawl teeth inside the mechanism, which means the damper may be stuck in whatever position it was last set. You don’t know until you look.
  • Water or rust streaks below the damper – that’s the top-seal gasket letting rain past and into the flue interior. This one is worth a camera look sooner rather than later, because water ingress is how a minor Gelco gasket repair turns into spalling brickwork or a liner replacement.

Replacement Cost & What’s Included

Based on what we’re charging across Austin right now, here’s what Gelco damper work looks like:

  • Cable assembly replacement: $265 – $340 installed
  • Top-seal gasket replacement: $300 – $390 installed
  • Full top-mount damper replacement: $410 – $485 installed (OEM plate, cable, gasket, and mounting hardware, depending on flue size)

What drives the range is flue size, roof access difficulty (some Austin two-story roofs are straight-up unpleasant to work on), and whether the old damper frame is still sound. If the frame is warped or the masonry around it is crumbling, that’s an additional repair we’ll show you on camera before anyone starts work.

What’s included every single time: a written price before work begins, photos of the old part and the new part installed, a written 365-Day Done Right Promise on the repair, and a free second visit if it fails within that year. That’s the Hadley way here in Austin – no surprise charges, no vague “we adjusted some things” invoice.

DIY or Call Us?

Here’s my honest take as someone who’s done this for over two decades: you can safely do the diagnostic part yourself. Look at the handle. Feel the cable tension. Take a photo of the damper from inside the firebox with your phone. Nothing dangerous about that. If the cable is visibly snapped or the handle spins free, that’s your answer, and you haven’t put yourself in harm’s way.

Where DIY goes wrong on Gelco dampers is the swap itself. The top-mount units require ladder work on a roof, usually with the flue opening right there at the roofline. The cables run through the flue interior and require proper tensioning against the pawl, and doing that wrong leaves you with a damper that doesn’t seal after a few days. One wrong move on a steep Austin roof is a fall you don’t come back from. My recommendation, plainly: if the part is inside the firebox and easy to reach, we’ll walk you through checking it. If it’s on the roof, call a pro at (361) 603-5116.
